The Laptop Gap: Why Tech Donations Can Be Life-Changing

man at laptop on desk. Words on screen show Cloe the Laptop Gap

For most people, a laptop is a basic tool for modern life. But for many blind and partially sighted job seekers, owning one remains out of reach. Instead, they’re trying to apply for jobs, complete training, or learn new skills using only a smartphone—an exhausting and often impossible task.

This is the reality of digital poverty—and it’s locking talented people out of work.

“I only have my iPhone—it makes everything harder…”

D***, a member of the Blind Ambition community, shared:

“Right now, I only have my iPhone, which makes things quite difficult when it comes to job searching and learning new skills. I’d love to work in digital marketing or web design, but I need the right tools to get started.”

Without a laptop, he couldn’t download screen-reading software like JAWS or NVDA, take online accessibility courses, or build the kind of digital confidence that employers expect.

This story is not unique. Across the UK, blind and partially sighted people are being shut out of employment simply because they don’t have access to affordable, accessible tech.

Why a Smartphone Isn’t Enough

While mobile technology has come a long way in improving accessibility, smartphones aren’t a substitute for a proper computer when it comes to:

  • Writing CVs and cover letters

  • Accessing job application portals

  • Using advanced screen readers or coding tools

  • Attending Zoom interviews or training courses

  • Navigating complex online forms or HR platforms

When digital access is limited, confidence drops, motivation suffers, and opportunities disappear.

“A laptop isn’t a luxury—it’s a gateway to independence.”

“The right technology can be life-changing. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about dignity, independence, and access to opportunity. A donated laptop can mean the difference between exclusion and employment.”
Seema Flower, Founder of Blind Ambition

At Blind Ambition, we regularly hear from jobseekers who are ready to work, ready to train, and ready to contribute—but who are held back by this simple barrier.

Who’s Helping Bridge the Gap?

If you or someone you know is in need of a laptop or accessible tech, these organisations may be able to help:

We are also exploring ways to partner with tech donors and funders to provide direct support to those we work with through Blind Ambition Recruitment.

What You Can Do

If you’re an employer with unused equipment, a donor looking to make an impact, or someone able to offer refurbished devices—please get in touch. The gift of a laptop is the gift of access.

If you’re a jobseeker, keep asking. Keep reaching out. And join our community to stay connected with others who are navigating the same journey.

Let’s close the laptop gap—together.
